Tuning into Social Media Trends: The Divergent Paths of Music Culture on TikTok and Instagram

The way people enjoy music has evolved significantly. The advancement of technology has led humans to adapt to new ways of consuming music. In the past, we might have had to wait for specific times to listen to music broadcasted by television and radio stations.

Even then, we didn’t have the freedom to choose the songs we liked as we pleased. At the very least, we had to call or send an SMS to request the songs we wanted to hear. In the 90s, MTV Indonesia emerged as a program dedicated to music, including top music charts. There weren’t many other television programs following suit at that time.

Then, in the late 2000s, music programs proliferated in Indonesia, such as Inbox, Dahsyat, Derings, and many others

Music holds great importance for the Indonesian society. According to the following survey, as many as 69.4% of respondents stated that they always listen to music at least once a week. 43.6% of respondents listen to music every day. Although some respondents do not listen to music every week, 30.4% still occasionally listen to music within a month. This indicates that nearly half of the Indonesian population listens to music almost every day.
